Comum is the ancient name of the city. It is the capital of the province of Como in Lombardy, northern Italy. It is located 40km north of Milan, on the southwestern edge of Lake Como. It is famous as a world-famous resort with many villas. The city's history is said to date back to the Celts, and it was colonized by Rome by Caesar. It became a free city in the 11th century, but soon came under Milan's control, and was ruled by the Visconci and Sforza families, Spain, France, and Austria, before being made an Italian territory by Garibaldi in 1859. The city's main industry has been silk weaving since the Middle Ages, and it is home to the National Silk Research Institute, and it also manufactures optical machinery and furniture. Construction began in the 14th century, and the marble cathedral, completed in the 18th century, and Romanesque churches remain. It is divided into the old town and the modern new town, and the center has moved to the new town. It is connected to Milan by rail and highways. Population 85,955 (estimated 1991).
