The city occupies a wide mountainous area in the southern part of Yamagata Prefecture, bordering the southern part of the Yonezawa Basin and Fukushima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. The central city area, located in the basin, developed as a castle town for the Uesugi clan. The Ou Main Line runs through the city, and the Yonesaka Line branches off from it. The traditional silk weaving industry, known as Yonezawa Tsumugi, was the city's main industry, but in recent years the electrical machinery industry has grown significantly, earning 546.5 billion yen (2003, the highest in the prefecture). Yonezawa beef, apples, sake, and cutlery are its specialties. The city was developed after the great fires of 1917 and 1919, but the form of a castle town remains. There are many shrines and temples, such as Uesugi Shrine and Uesugi Mausoleum, and many events related to the Uesugi clan, such as the Uesugi Festival. On the slopes of Mt. Azuma in the south, there are hot springs such as Shirabu Takayu and Goshiki, and the city is part of Bandai-Asahi National Park.
