Penis Case

Japanese: ペニス･ケース

A cylindrical protective device worn over the male genitals. It developed among tropical indigenous peoples who lived completely naked or nearly so, and is seen as the smallest unit of clothing. Many of them have a strong desire to decorate, even if they do not have developed clothing, and the penis case serves the function of both protecting the genitals and decorating them. It is seen among hunter-gatherers in the Amazon-Orinoco River basin, aborigines in the central and northern parts of the country, indigenous peoples of the Sudan region of Africa, and some Melanesians. It is made from a variety of materials, including plant stems and leaves, bamboo, gourds, shells, animal hides, and tree bark.

男性性器にかぶせる筒状の保護具。全裸もしくはそれに近い状態で生活している熱帯の原住民に発達しており，最小単位の服飾とも見られる。彼らの多くは，衣服は発達していない場合でも装飾本能は強く，ペニス･ケースも性器の保護と同時に，装飾の機能をももっている。アマゾン･オリノコ川流域の採集狩猟民，中央および北部のアボリジニー，アフリカのスーダン地方の原住民，一部のメラネシア人などに見受けられる。素材はさまざまで，植物の茎や葉，竹，ヒョウタン，貝殻，獣皮，樹皮などが用いられている。
