Annual Register

…The term “yearbook” was first used in the English Legal Year Books, which included legal precedents from 1292 to 1534. The oldest yearbook covering social events in general was the Annual Register, edited by E. Burke in 1759, followed by the Almanach de Gotha (1764), which included genealogies of European kings and nobles and statistics for each country. From the 19th century onwards, so-called “general yearbooks” appeared, covering a wide range of fields in both statistics and records, and Whittaker's Almanack (first published in 1869) was particularly well-known. …

…イヤーブックという書名が最初に用いられたのはイギリスの《法律年鑑The English Legal Year Books》で，1292‐1534年までの判例を収録している。社会事象一般を収録した年鑑としては，1759年にE.バークにより編集された《アニュアル･レジスターAnnual Register》が最も古く，次いでヨーロッパ各国の王侯･貴族の系譜や各国の統計を記載した《ゴータ年鑑Almanach de Gotha》(1764)が出現した。19世紀以降になると，統計，記録ともに広い分野を網羅したいわゆる〈総合年鑑〉も出現するが，とりわけ《ホイッティカーズ･アルマナックWhitaker’s Almanack》(1869創刊)は著名である。…
