The oldest school in Japan specializing in foreign language education. It was founded in 1913 (Taisho 2) when Joseph Cotte (1875-1949), a lecturer at the Faculty of Literature of Tokyo Imperial University, began lecturing French literature under the name "Higher French" at the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages (now Tokyo University of Foreign Studies) in Kanda, Tokyo. In 2002 (Heisei 14), the school taught French, English, Greek, and Latin, with a total of about 240 classes, 90 instructors, and an average of 6,000 students over the years, and has since counted more than 400,000 since its establishment. It contributed to the spread of French language and French culture in Japan, and many famous writers and artists have studied here. It also houses the Athénée Français Cultural Center (established in 1970), which aims to promote international exchange through film. The school is located at 2-11 Kanda Surugadai, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.
