This article provides a unified description of the decorative styles under the reigns of French Kings Louis XIII and XIV, Regent Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, Louis XV, and Louis XVI. Originally, the names of each style, such as "Louis XIV style," were used to clarify the differences in the styles of architecture, interior decoration, furniture, and crafts of each of these successive kings. After the reign of Louis XII (1498-1515), who was mainly influenced by Italy and relied on imports of much of his furniture from Italy and other countries, art from the period of Henry IV (reigned 1589-1610) to Louis XIII (reigned 1610-43) was still a mixture of Italian and Flemish influences and the traditions of the School of Fontainebleau. However, during this period, when feudal lords lived in rural chateaux, decorative styles that showed unique tastes were born. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
