…Pliny the Elder's representative work, Natural History, includes records of humans, animals, and plants in unknown lands as monsters, based on information brought by Alexander the Great's expedition to India. It lists Amazons (warlike women with their right breasts cut off), Antipodes (with legs facing backwards), Astomi (without mouths, living by smelling apples and other scents), Brhemyae (headless people with faces on their chests), Sciapodes (using one large leg as a parasol), and countless other strange peoples. In addition, in Alexandria in the 3rd and 4th centuries, a didactic animal history (Physiologos) was created that borrowed from Aristotle's works, and, together with Pliny, became a major source of medieval animal allegories (Bestiari) as a document containing many descriptions of monsters. …
