This was a government-run public library established in Kuramae, Asakusa, Tokyo for seven years from 1875 (Meiji 8) to 1881. It inherited the collections of the Edo Shogunate's Shoheizaka Gakumonjo and Wagaku Kodansho, among others, and contained approximately 110,000 old Japanese and Chinese books, which were frequently used by academic researchers. Most of the collection is now preserved in the National Archives of Japan. In addition, it is said that the doctor Itasaka Bokusai, the feudal lord Hotta Masamori, and the vassal Kimura Jusuke, who all lived in Asakusa during the Edo period, called their respective collections the Asakusa Bunko, and the Meiji and Taisho scholar Otsuki Joden also used the name of the library on his library stamp.
