A type of folding fan used by court ladies with their formal attire. In rare cases, it was also carried by aristocratic boys. The fan was made by joining thin cypress or cedar boards together, with vividly colored pictures painted on both sides and long decorative cords attached to both ends. Relics from the Heian period can be found at Sada Shrine and Itsukushima Shrine. In the early modern period, the number of boards was set at 39, and thread flowers and decorative metal fittings were added, and it came to be called Ōkazashi.
