...A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The Akechi clan was a branch of the Toki clan in Mino, but Mitsuhide first served Asakura Yoshikage in Echizen, and then served Ashikaga Yoshiaki when he was exiled to the Asakura clan. He then became a retainer of Oda Nobunaga and made an effort to help Yoshiaki come to Kyoto. He served both Yoshiaki and Nobunaga as a retainer and was also involved in the administration of Kyoto. After the fall of the Muromachi Shogunate, he was appointed by Nobunaga and participated in the war of conquest. In 1571 (Genki 2), he became the lord of Sakamoto Castle in Omi. In 1575 (Tensho 3), he was named Koreto Hyuga no Kami and began the conquest of Tamba. In 1579, he defeated Hatano Hideharu and others at Yakami Castle and pacified the area. In 1580, he became the lord of Kameyama Castle. He then had Hosokawa Fujitaka, Tsutsui Junkei, and the Nakagawa and Takayama clans attached to him as yoriki (assistants), and he gained control of key points on the east and west of Kyoto, forming a group of vassals centered around samurai from Mino, Omi, and Tamba, as well as former retainers of the Shogunate. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Akechi Tarentomi Hyuganokami" are listed below.
