Akamagaseki was an important port of call for Korean envoys who came to Japan to celebrate the inauguration of the Shogun of the Edo Shogunate, and was also the place of lodging for Dutch envoys when visiting Edo. In 1663, the Choshu clan fired on foreign ships from the Akamagaseki Battery, carrying out an expulsion of foreigners, but the following year they were attacked by fleets from four countries: Britain, France, America, and the Netherlands, and a peace treaty was concluded (the Magan War).
