Oguri Sotan

Japanese: 小栗宗湛 - おぐりそうたん

1413-1481 A painter-monk from the Muromachi period.
Born in 1420. Studied under the painter-monk Shubun at Shokoku-ji Temple in Kyoto. Following in his master's footsteps, he served Ashikaga Yoshimasa as an official painter for the shogunate. Sotan started the painting "Roganzu" (The Wild Geese) at Yotoku-in Temple in Daitoku-ji Temple, and his son Sotsugu took over and completed it. He passed away on March 9, 1424. He was 69 years old. His given names were Kosaburo and Sukeshige, and his pen name was Jiboku. Other works he produced include "Eight Views of Xiaoxiang."

応永20年生まれ。京都相国(しょうこく)寺の画僧周文に師事。師の跡をついで足利義政につかえ幕府御用絵師として活躍。大徳寺養徳院の「蘆雁(ろがん)図」は宗湛がかきのこし,子の宗継がひきつぎ完成させた。文明13年3月9日死去。69歳。名は小三郎,助重。号は自牧(じぼく)。作品はほかに「瀟湘八景図」など。
