A clumping perennial herb of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). The culm can reach a height of up to 1 meter. It flowers from May to July with a 10-20 cm long, slightly drooping inflorescence at the top. The glumes are covered with rough, short hairs and have one or two teeth at the top, with a recurved awn. It is found in the plains from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is also distributed in Korea and China. The Tachikamoji variety does not have drooping inflorescences, grows in mountainous areas, and has hairless glumes.

イネ科(APG分類:イネ科)の株立ちの多年草。稈(かん)は高さ1メートルにも達する。花は5~7月に開き、頂端にやや下垂する長さ10~20センチメートルの花穂をもつ。護穎(ごえい)にはざらつく短毛が生え、頂端に1ないしは2歯牙(しが)があり、反り返った芒(のぎ)を出す。北海道から九州にかけての平地の原野にみられ、朝鮮、中国にも分布する。変種のタチカモジは花穂が垂れ下がらず、山地に生え、護穎は無毛である。
