In 1938, he succeeded in obtaining a photographic image by applying a static charge to a layer of sulfur molten on a zinc plate by frictional charging, and developing this with ruthenium powder (a type of electroscopic powder). He invented the basic principle of modern electrophotography and obtained a patent (1940). Later, the American company Xerox improved on this method by using amorphous selenium instead of sulfur and corona discharge instead of frictional charging, and in 1950, it was commercialized under the name Xerox.
