It is believed that what was originally a pattern of braided cord gradually developed independently into a continuous pattern of intersecting cords. Its characteristics are the magical nature of the braiding or knotting and the almost mystical continuity. It is also one of the more three-dimensional patterns that tend to be flat. Braided cord patterns have been seen in various places since ancient times, and the twisted ribbon-like patterns seen on Sumerian ceramic panels from the 3rd millennium BC and the Assyrian relief known as the Tree of Life (1000 BC) are thought to be related to the scroll pattern and palmette pattern, respectively.
