A city in the Hérault department in southern France. Formerly known as Cette (used until 1927). Population 39,542 (1999). It is located on a sandbar between the Bay of Lyon on the Mediterranean coast and the lagoon of the Étang de Thau. The Sète Canal, built in the 17th century, connects the sea to the lagoon, which leads to the Canal du Midi. It developed as France's second largest Mediterranean port city after Marseille, and is home to oil refining, chemicals, electrical machinery, and food industries. It is also one of the leading fishing ports on the Mediterranean coast, and in recent years has also become the center of a leisure area. It is the birthplace of the poet Paul Valéry, and is home to the Valéry Museum, and his grave is located in the cemetery known for his work "Cimetiere à la Maritime".
