During the Genroku and Hoei periods (1688-1711), the shogunate lowered the value of gold and silver coins to increase the amount of currency, which led to rising prices and a loss of trust in the currency. In May 1714 (Shotoku 4), Arai Hakuseki, an aide to the seventh shogun, Tokugawa Ietsugu, carried out a purge of Nakamura Kuranosuke, a ginza toshiyori (senior councilor) who had been living an extravagant lifestyle thanks to the profits from the recoinage, and issued Shotoku koban and Shotoku ichibu gold coins of the same fineness as the Keicho gold coin. In August of the same year, he also minted Shotoku chogin and mameban silver coins of the same fineness as the Keicho silver coin (Shotoku gold and silver).
