...In the 13th century, the residents of the merchant and craftsmen district strengthened their communal solidarity and gained autonomy from the city prince, and in the 14th century, it joined the Hanseatic League and played an active role as the center of the League of Saxony Cities. During that time, the capital of the Grand Duchy was moved to Wolfenbüttel, 12 km south, and in the late Middle Ages, the city declined due to repeated serious internal conflicts, but after the Thirty Years' War it became the capital of the Grand Duchy again, and in the mid-18th century it reached a new period of prosperity. Built as a three-aisled basilica by Henry the Lion between 1173 and 1195, the cathedral is the oldest vaulted building in Lower Saxony.
