A city in the southeast of New South Wales, Australia. It is 318 km west of Sydney by road. Population 12,462 (2001). It is the center of a fertile agricultural and livestock region, and light industries such as canned asparagus are also well developed. It was the site of a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II, and is known for the mass escape incident (August 1944, in which 247 people died). There is a Japanese war cemetery built by the Japanese government in 1964 (Showa 39). Settled in 1846. The name comes from an aboriginal word meaning rock.
