…In Japan, catalogs were used until just after the end of the war. Catalogs first appeared in Europe in the 1470s as book lists, and in America, from the end of the 19th century, catalog sales, in which companies such as Sears, Roebuck and Co. used catalogs to directly obtain orders from a wide range of customers, developed. In Japan, the oldest is Jiyu Jizai, published in Edo in 1780 (An'ei 9), but Edo Shopping Guide (Shopping Guide) published in 1824 (Bunsei 7), which lists about 2,400 merchants, is also an excellent guide catalog. …
