Vielle

...There are various theories about its birthplace, but the most widely accepted theory is that it originated in Central Asia. In Europe, bowed string instruments such as the pear-shaped rebec and the narrow-bodied vielle began to be used around the 11th century. While the rebec did not see any significant development after that, the vielle came to be called the viol in the 15th century, and formed a family of instruments in the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass ranges, becoming an important ensemble instrument during the Renaissance.
