…Following the industrial information magazine Fortune (1930), he launched a completely new type of magazine with Life (1936), a large-format, all-art paper with popular figures and themes as photo stories. The success of Time not only gave rise to competing magazines such as Business Week (1929), USNews and World Report (1933), and Newsweek (1933) in the United States, but also led to the emergence of weekly information magazines in various European countries after the war, such as Spiegel (1947) in West Germany, L'Express (1957) in France, and Panorama (1962) in Italy. Life's circulation increased dramatically around the time of World War II, reaching about 7 million copies in 1971, but it was unable to earn enough advertising revenue to cover its production costs and closed at the end of 1972. …
