The hydrochloride (tetracycline hydrochloride) is _a yellow crystalline powder. Both are odorless and inhibit _protein synthesis in microorganisms, providing a broad antibacterial spectrum. Applied orally or intramuscularly to treat infections with gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pneumococcus, gram-negative bacteria such as Shigella and Escherichia coli, various rickettsiae, and chlamydia. Side effects include bacterial replacement, gastrointestinal disorders, and photosensitivity. Unlike in the early stages of development, the number of resistant bacteria has increased, and the throne has been ceded to penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics.

化学式はC₂₂H₂₄O₈N₂。抗生物質。商標アクロマイシン。数種の放線菌が産生，全合成も可能。黄色結晶，無臭。塩酸塩（塩酸テトラサイクリン）は黄色結晶性粉末。無臭で両者とも微生物のタンパク質合成を阻害し，広範囲な抗菌スペクトルを呈する。ブドウ球菌，肺炎球菌等のグラム陽性菌，赤痢菌，大腸菌等のグラム陰性菌，各種リケッチア，クラミジアなどの感染症に内服や筋注により適用。副作用として菌交代症，胃腸障害，光線過敏症など。開発初期と異なって耐性菌が多くなり，王座をペニシリン系・セフェム系抗生物質に明け渡した。
