The city is the fourth-largest along the Volga River, stretching for 70 km along the river and measuring 3–10 km wide. It means "City on the Volga River" and was called Tsaritsyn (meaning "City of the Empress" until 1925, but a Russian interpretation of the Tatar place name Saryi-Su (Yellow Water)).
