...A fall-sown annual plant of the Ranunculaceae family, grown for cut flowers and in flower beds (illustration). It is also called Chidori-sou (plover grass) or Hiensou (flying swallow grass) due to the shape of the flower. The stem is 80-100cm tall, stands upright, and splits into small branches at the top, producing many flowers in a cluster in May. The leaves grow on the roots from autumn to winter when the plant is still in seedling form, but when the stem stands upright in spring, the leaves grow alternately on the stem, palmately lobating into three, and then pinnately lobating two or three times. The flowers have five petal-like calyxes, colored red, purple, pink, white, etc., and are of various sizes, with the largest piece at the base having a spur. ...
