The Hunchback of Aomori Prefecture

...In 1968, the Jiyugeki Theater merged with the Rokugatsu Theater and the Discovery Society to form the Theater Center 68/69, and in 1970, it became the Theater Center 68/70, performing in black tents in trucks, among which Sato played a central role, writing and directing many great plays, including Nezumi Kozo Jirokichi and Comedy Abe Sada: Desires of the Showa Era. Terayama Shuji, who showed precocious talent in tanka, haiku, and poetry since his student days, formed the Theater Laboratory Tenjo Sajiki with Higashi Yutaka and painter Yokoo Tadanori in 1967, and wrote and performed The Hunchback of Aomori Prefecture, The Crime of Oyama Debuko, and Marie of the Fur, bringing him into the limelight. These plays had a strong "spectacle" character, with strange and mysterious actors such as dwarfs, giantess, cross-dressers and beautiful boys suddenly appearing in the dark, closed rooms of the city. In this skilfully staged anti-public world, a "total world" in which bodies and minds that are unreasonably rejected as having negative value by the norms of the everyday world coexist, various thoughts lurking in our subconscious are examined.

…自由劇場は68年には〈六月劇場〉〈発見の会〉と合同して〈演劇センター68/69〉と改組，さらに70年からは〈演劇センター68/70〉としてトラックで移動する黒色テント公演に入るが，その中でも佐藤は《鼠小僧次郎吉》《喜劇阿部定――昭和の欲情》など多くの好戯曲を執筆･演出して，中心的な役割を果たした。　また，学生時代から短歌や俳句，詩などで早熟な才能を示していた寺山修司は，67年，東由多加（ひがしゆたか），画家の横尾忠則らと〈演劇実験室天井桟敷〉を結成，同年《青森県のせむし男》《大山デブコの犯罪》《毛皮のマリー》を執筆･上演して一躍，脚光を浴びた。これらは都会の暗い密室のなかに，突如として侏儒（しゆじゆ），大女，女装者，美少年などの奇優･怪優を出現させる強く〈見世物〉的な性格を帯びた劇であったが，そのような巧みに演出された反･公的な世界，日常世界の規範によって負の価値を帯びたものとしていわれなく排除された肉体･精神が共存する〈全的な世界〉の中で，われわれの無意識下に潜むさまざまな想念が検証されるのであった。…
