He became president in 1862 as the successor to his father, Carlos Antonio Lopez (President from 1844 to 1862), who introduced a republic to Paraguay. He worked to develop the economy and strengthened the military, and at the end of 1864, he entered the Paraguayan War in an attempt to become a mediator between the La Plata countries. The president himself led the army in the battle, but was killed in action on March 1, 1870, at the Battle of Cora. He is considered a hero of Paraguay's patriotism. …
