A nationwide famine that began in 1459 (Choroku 3) and continued until 1461 (Kansho 2). Drought in the spring and summer of 1459 and a typhoon in the Kinai region on September 10th led to a famine that extended from the Kinai region to western Japan over the next year. The disruption of transport of goods from the eastern provinces due to conflict in the Kanto region and the impact of heavy rains and floods in April of the following year on wheat crops also contributed to this. Drought from spring to early summer, prolonged rains from May onwards, flooding, low temperatures and locust infestations also led to poor rice harvests nationwide in 1460, and devastation caused by war was added to the famine in Kawachi, Kii, Etchu and Echizen.
