[Tunnel construction method and shape]
Subway tunnel construction methods are broadly divided into vertical excavation, in which a tunnel is dug from the ground surface down, and horizontal excavation, in which a tunnel is excavated horizontally. The most common of the former is the open cut method (also called the cut and cover method or open cut method), and other methods include the caisson method. Representative horizontal excavation methods are the shield method and the mountain tunnel method.

...a space created below the ground surface by digging into soil or rock, usually in the form of a long, narrow, nearly horizontal passageway. Usually, tunnels are created by digging underground, leaving the natural ground above, but tunnels can also be created by digging a trench from the ground surface, constructing a tunnel structure in it, and then filling it back in, a method known as cut-and-cover construction. This method is used to build relatively shallow subways under city streets.
