Marmash

…The second period of prosperity, from the 9th to the 11th centuries, saw the development of sculptural techniques and decoration, enriching artistic expression. Examples of this are the churches of Ani, Agthamar, and Marmashen (northwest of Leninakan), which produced excellent architecture. The exterior was decorated with thin small columns and arches at key points in the architecture, and strips of carved arabesques and geometric patterns were added to clarify the composition of the architecture. In the church of Agthamar, the extensive grape arabesques and the flat, thick reliefs of figures of holy figures, donors, and animals were carved, giving a unique sense of vitality.
