A general term for crabs in the family Pinnotheridae of the class Crustacea. Many species live parasitically, inhabiting the mantle cavity of bivalves or the cloaca of sea cucumbers, hence the name, and are sometimes called mistletoe crabs. However, there are also many species that live freely on the sea floor, moving in and out of the burrows of worms and sea worms as needed. They are also called pinnos, after their basic genus name, Pinnotheres . Species that live symbiotically or parasitically with various animals do not eat their hosts, but they occupy space in the mantle cavity and other areas, hindering the host's growth.
