It is one of the few conifers that grow in the Southern Hemisphere, and is a genus of evergreen tall trees in the Araucaria family native to Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, etc. Although it is a conifer, it has flat, wide, alternate leaves similar to those of the caltrop. There are several species, including the copal tree, and many of them have been used since ancient times because they contain resin. The resin, called Manila copal or kauri gum, is used for paint and decoration, and the wood is dense and beautiful, so it is used for crafts. It is also called dammarge, but this name is confusingly similar to that of a resin from a completely different group of plants in the Dipterocarpaceae family.

南半球に生育する数少い針葉樹で，東南アジアとオーストラリア，ニュージーランドなどに原産するナンヨウスギ科の常緑高木の1属。針葉樹類ではあるがナギに似た扁平，幅広の葉を互生する。コパールノキなど数種があり，多くは樹脂をもつので古くから利用されてきた。樹脂はマニラコパール，カウリガムなどと呼ばれ塗料や装飾用に使い，また材は緻密で美しいため工芸用に用いる。ダンマルジュとも呼ぶが，この名のもととなったダンマル樹脂はまったく別群のフタバガキ科の植物の樹脂の名であるためまぎらわしい。
