... In Japan, there are about 10 species of wild roses other than Rosa multiflora. Among them, R. wichuraiana Crép. (memorial rose) is commonly found in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, along with Rosa multiflora. It has creeping stems, thicker and shinier leaves, and larger flowers (3 cm in diameter) than Rosa multiflora, and is common on coasts and wastelands. Rosa fujii, which grows in the mountains of western Kanto and Shikoku, Rosa morii, which is distributed up to Kyushu, Rosa yabui (also called fragrant rose), which is common on the Pacific coast of Kinki, Shikoku and Kyushu, and Rosa miyakoi, which is found in Hokuriku, Kinki and Chugoku regions and in the northern parts of Shikoku and Kyushu, are all very similar to each other and are sometimes considered separate species, but they are also sometimes grouped together as R. luciae Franch.et Rochebr. and treated as varieties. ...
