Menachin

...It is also called titanium. In 1789, the British Gregor W. Gregor (1761-1817) hypothesized the presence of a new metal in iron sand (ilmenite) from Menachan in Cornwall and named it menachin. In 1794, the German MH Klaproth discovered a new element in rutile, which he named titanium after the giant Titan in Greek mythology. In 1897, he demonstrated that it was the same as menachin, and in recognition of Gregor's priority, the element was subsequently called titanium.
