Sengoku Incident - Sengoku Incident

During the Tenpo era (1830-44), the Sengoku family, a daimyo of the Izushi domain in Tajima (Hyogo prefecture) with a fief of over 58,000 koku, experienced a family feud. In 1824 (Bunsei 7), the domain's lord Masayoshi died suddenly, but as he had no heir, his younger brother Michinosuke (5 years old, Hisari) took over. Sengoku Sakyo, a senior retainer who was a branch of the Sengoku family and held a fief of 1,500 koku and was influential, tried to support his own son Kotaro in place of Michinosuke. He married Kotaro's daughter, Chikara, the younger brother of Matsudaira Yasuto, a senior councilor, and got closer to Yasuto. He also lobbied Masayoshi's father Hisamichi to remove and punish the senior vassals. As a result, the opposition leader, Kono Sehyō, heard about Sakyo's actions, and his relative, Sengoku Chōnosuke, filed a complaint with the shogunate, which brought the matter to light. After an investigation by the Magistrate of Temples and Shrines, Wakizaka Yasushige, it became clear that Sakyo and his associates had plotted, and in 1835 (Tenpo 6), they were found guilty and the Izushi Domain's kokudaka (rice yield) was reduced to just over 30,000 koku.
