In 1849, a chair of Slavic philology was established at the University of Vienna, and the Slovenian Franz Miklošič (1813-91), known for his work on Comparative Grammar of the Slavic Languages, was in charge of the chair. Together with the German Indo-European linguist A. Schleicher, who was in charge of a chair at Charles University in Prague, which opened around the same time, they trained many excellent Slavic scholars.
