...Furthermore, it was recognized as an academic field beyond the Slavic world, even in Western Europe. In 1849, a chair of Slavic philology was established at the University of Vienna, and the Slovenian Franz Miklošič (1813-91), known for his work on Comparative Grammar of the Slavic Languages, was in charge of the chair. Together with the German Indo-European linguist A. Schleicher, who was in charge of a chair at Charles University in Prague, which opened around the same time, they trained many excellent Slavic scholars. The Croatian Vatroslav Jagić (1838-1923), who was in charge of a chair at the University of Vienna from 1887, also taught in Germany and Russia, promoting cooperation between researchers from the various countries.
