Yamamura Style
A school of Japanese dance and Kamigata-mai. The founder of the school was Yamamura Tomogoro I (1781-1844). He was the son of Kamigata kabuki actor Fujikawa Iwamatsu, and became a disciple of Yamamura Tomoemon I, taking on his master's original name Tomogoro. However, when his master passed away in June 1812 (Bunka 1), he quit acting and became a choreographer. He became the exclusive choreographer for Nakamura Utaemon III, and was considered the best choreographer in Kamigata during the Tenpo era (1830-1844), and took the names Yamamura Maisensai and Maisensai Goto. In addition to kabuki dance such as "Mitsumenwankyu," he established the foundations of the Yamamura school as the master of jikamai. The second was the adopted son of the first, Tomosaburo (16-95), who took the stage name Tomogoro after the death of the first and became head of the Yamamura school. He worked as a choreographer at theaters, while also perfecting and perfecting the Yamamura school's dance, perfecting the style we know today. The first's adopted daughter Ren was the first head of the mountain village "Kyuzanmura" in Kuroemoncho and worked as a choreographer at theaters in Kyoto and Osaka, but she died in 1881 and has no successor to the head of the school. The first's adopted daughter Toku became the first head of the mountain village "Shimayamamura" in Shimauchi, and her grandson Wakako perfected today's jikamai dance as a female-oriented zashiki-mai dance, and in March 1942 was recommended to succeed the third head of the school, taking the stage name Yamamura Maisensai Goto II. At that time, her grandson Yamamurakiku took the stage name Wakako II, but in April 1948 she succeeded the fourth head of the school and changed her stage name to Waka. After the death of the 4th head, his grandson Takeshi Yamamura succeeded him as the 6th head in 1992, and the 5th head title was posthumously bestowed upon his mother, the late Ito Yamamura.
