Milizia, F. (English spelling) MiliziaF

[Changes in concept]
The concept of "Baroque" was used in 18th-century Italian and French art criticism as a derogatory term to refer to a specific 17th-century art style, as is clear from the dictionaries of both countries from that period. In the entry on "architecture" in the French Dictionary of the History of Architecture (1788), AC Quatremère de Quincy defines Baroque as "a species of bizarre (strangeness), refined eccentricity, and its abuse," while F. Milizia's Italian Dictionary of Fine Arts (1797) also calls Baroque a "depraved taste" in which classical standards such as proportion and balance are not observed. French art critics of the 18th century, such as Quatremère de Quincy, were advocates of academic ideals, while the Italian Mirizia was a neoclassical critic who was devoted to the ideas of Winckelmann, who considered the art of classical antiquity and the Renaissance to be the highest standards and 17th-century art to be decadent.
