A small island in the lagoon located about 10 km northeast of Venice in northern Italy. Administratively it belongs to Venice. It served as a refuge when foreign tribes invaded, and the bishopric was moved to the island in the mid-7th century. It flourished as a stopover for trade with the East by galleys, but Venice took control and it began to fall in the 9th century. Canals run around the island, and facing the large square stands the octagonal Church of San Fosca (late 11th century), and to the left of that stands the Byzantine-style Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (founded in 639).
