…In 1854 (Ansei 1), he resigned from his position as a translator at the Observatory, and in 1856, he was appointed professor at the Bansho Shirabesho (Institute of Bansho), together with Mitsukuri Genpo and others. He was one of the first to use an imitation stethoscope brought to Japan by Otto GJMohnike (1814-87), and translated CWHoufelland's works, especially his "Fushiikai" (Medical Precepts) in which he emphasized medical ethics. He also wrote "Tamagawa Kikō" (Travels through Tamagawa) in Dutch, and translated many other books. …

…He inherited the family headship in March 1894, became a doctor for the Saga domain, permanently residing in Nagasaki, and also played a role in collecting information on overseas affairs for the domain. He made efforts to put into practice the cowpox inoculation method he had learned from Siebold, and in 1803 (Kaei 1), he ordered cowpox scabs from overseas for Otto GJMohnike, who came to Japan, and succeeded the following year, paving the way for its spread throughout the country.
