Originally it meant a ladder. Later it came to be used specifically to mean Muhammad's ascension to heaven. The Qur'an describes God as the Lord of the ladder that leads to heaven (70:3), and also records that it took Muhammad on a night journey (isrā') from the sacred shrine al-masjid al-ḥarām to the distant shrine al-masjid al-aqṣā (17:1). The sacred shrine refers to the Kaaba in Mecca, and the distant shrine refers to heaven, but later hadīth (traditions) identify the distant shrine with the temple in Jerusalem, and say that Muhammad was taken by the angel Gabriel on a winged winged horse (Burāq), traveled to Jerusalem, climbed a ladder of light, and ascended to heaven, where he prostrated himself before the throne of God.
