…In the midst of this crisis, on February 12, the Socialist Party and the Communist Party, although in separate ranks, organized a demonstration of nearly 100,000 people in total, and the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and the General Confederation of United Labor (CGTU), which had been divided since 1921, staged a general strike to counter the offensive of right-wing forces. Attempts to organize joint actions against the rise of fascism had been made since 1932 by intellectuals such as Romain Rolland and Henri Barbusse, who called for peace (mouvement d'Amsterdam-Pleyel movement), and in 1933 by the left-wing radical Socialist G.
