A deciduous tree of the Rosaceae family cultivated as a flowering tree. Also called Deutzia umbellata. It grows to about 5m in height, with reddish brown twigs. The leaves are narrowly obovate, about 5cm long, usually entire, with powdery white undersides. In late spring, the branches produce racemes at the top of the branches, with 5-10 flowers. The flowers are white, with 5 nearly circular petals, and are rather large, 3-4cm in diameter, making them beautiful. There are about 20 stamens, which are conspicuous. Native to central mainland China, it is cold-resistant, and is cultivated for ornamental purposes not only in China and Japan but also in Europe and the United States.
