Following the technological innovations of the mid-17th century, important inventions and improvements were made to escapements and balance wheels throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and the invention of new alloys and ruby ​​bearings also contributed greatly to improving precision, making watches smaller, and facilitating manufacturing. In particular, the lever escapement, which is said to have been invented by the Englishman Thomas Mudge (1715-94) around 1755, came to be used in all clocks that had a balance wheel as an oscillator, making it possible to manufacture small, thin, highly accurate pocket clocks. Pocket clocks were made in England, France, Switzerland, and other countries, but while Switzerland began to make thin, highly accurate clocks early on, England continued to make heavy, sturdy clocks, and France, although elegant, was slow to adopt new technology, which led to the rapid growth of the Swiss watch industry.
