Kusatsu [town] - Kusatsu

Japanese: 草津[町] - くさつ
Kusatsu [town] - Kusatsu
A town in Agatsuma County in the northwest of Gunma Prefecture, occupying the eastern foot of Mt. Shirane. The town's center has been famous since ancient times as a hot spring town, with inns developing around the hot spring water source, the Yubatake. The strongly acidic hydrogen sulfide-containing alum spring is 60-67°C, and the water is abundant and of a strong quality, so the town is known as a "yu-momi" (hot spring mineral spring). Yunohana (hot spring mineral spring flowers) are harvested from the Yubatake. The Kusatsu-bushi folk song is handed down here. The town is also known as a summer resort, ski resort, and trailhead for Mt. Shirane, and is part of Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park. A bus service runs from Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station on the Agatsuma Line. 49.75 km2 . 7,160 people (2010).
