Baluchistan

Japanese: バルーチスターン
Baluchistan
Also known as Balochistan. A region that stretches from southwestern Pakistan to southeastern Iran and the southernmost part of Afghanistan. The name means "land of the Baluchis," and roughly corresponds to Baluchistan Province in Pakistan (6,511,000 people, 1998; provincial capital: Quetta) and Sistan-Balochistan Province in Iran. The inhabitants are Baluchis, as well as Brafis and Pashtuns on the Pakistani side. Most of the land is dry and barren, except for the Mawaran region that straddles Iran and Pakistan. Nomadic pastoralism and irrigated agriculture (cotton, wheat, etc.) using qanats are practiced. Natural gas is produced.
