Hayashi Tadataka

He was the lord of Kazusa Ushio Nishi Domain (Chiba Prefecture) in the late Edo period. He inherited the family headship in August 1867. After the restoration of imperial rule, he declared his determination to die for the Tokugawa. He was 20 years old at the time. In April of the following year, 1868, he left the Kisarazu camp leading the former shogunate's guerrilla forces, including samurai, Hitomi Katsutaro, and Iba Hachiro. He landed at Manazuru by sea and attempted to cooperate with the Odawara Domain, but failed. In May, he fought against the new government forces and Odawara Domain soldiers at Hakone, but was defeated. He traveled from Atami to Tateyama, and then took the Kanrin Maru to land at Onahama in Oshu. He joined the Oshu-Uetsu Alliance Army, but surrendered in October when he learned that the Tokugawa family name would continue to exist. He had his land confiscated and was imprisoned in the Karatsu Domain residence in Tokyo. He was released in the 6th year of the same year. He later returned to farming. Former Shogunate officials were invited to a 30th anniversary memorial service for those who died in the Boshin War at Mount Kano in Kazusa.

幕末の上総請西藩(千葉県)藩主。慶応3(1867)年8月家督相続。王政復古ののち,徳川に殉じる決意を表明。時に20歳。翌明治1(1868)年4月,藩士並びに人見勝太郎,伊庭八郎ら旧幕府遊撃隊を率いて木更津の陣屋を出立。海路を真鶴に上陸し,小田原藩との協同を図るが失敗。5月,箱根に新政府軍および小田原藩兵と交戦し敗北。熱海から館山へ,次いで咸臨丸により奥州小名浜に上陸。奥羽越列藩同盟軍に参軍するが,10月,徳川家の家名存続を知り降伏。所領没収の処分を受け,東京唐津藩邸に禁固された。同5年釈放。のち帰農。旧幕臣を招き上総鹿野山に戊辰戦争戦没者の三十年祭を行う。
