1728‐1800 Italian opera buffa composer. After working in Naples, Rome, and elsewhere, he moved to Paris in 1776. In the so-called "Gluck-Piccinni Dispute," which divided the Parisian music world, he represented the Italian faction against the French faction led by Gluck, composing the opera Iphigenie in Tauris (1781) with the same libretto as Gluck, but was at a disadvantage. In addition to numerous operas in both French and Italian, which boast beautiful melodies, he also composed oratorios, symphonies, and church music. His representative operas include Les le naïvetés (1760), Rolland (1778), and Didon (1783). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
