A critical magazine. In December 1906 (Meiji 39), the magazine of the nationalist group Seikyosha, Nihonjin (First published in 1888), was renamed and launched under the presidency of Miyake Setsurei with the January 1, 1907 issue (volume 450). It was published twice a month. In addition to Setsurei, the writers at the time included Hasegawa Nyozekan, Fukumoto Ninnan, Maruyama Mikiji, Kojima Kazuo, and Kutsumi Ketsuson. As can be seen from this lineup, even though it was nationalism, it was not a narrow one like right-wing national polity theory, but an enlightened nationalism that opposed the top-down Westernization policy of the Meiji government. Therefore, Nyozekan and Maruyama became the central debaters of Taisho democracy. However, in the Taisho period, Mitsui Koushi and Sugiura Shigetake joined the group, and in the Showa period, as the war of aggression began, the magazine took on a stronger ultra-nationalistic tone, and became a wartime magazine. The magazine, which featured novels by Nyozekan and Nakazato Kaizan and actively introduced foreign literature, continued until 1944 (Showa 19). In 1966 (Showa 41), a magazine of the same name was published by Nihon to Nihonjinsha and continues to this day, but it no longer has the color of its past.
