Reclus, (Jean-Jacques-) Élisée
Born March 15, 1830, Saint-Foy-La Grande, Gironde
[Died] July 4, 1905. Bruges. French geographer. Born in the Gironde as the son of a pastor, he studied geography under C. Ritter at the University of Berlin. He actively participated in the Paris Commune, and was arrested and exiled. After that, he published many works on geography, mainly in Switzerland, including Nouvelle Géographie Universelle, La terre et les hommes (19 volumes, 1875-94). His geography shows the influence of Ritter's holistic understanding of nature and humans, but at the same time he positioned humans within nature from an ecological perspective, and considered harmony with the environment under a decentralized or anarchic social system, becoming an ideological pioneer of the current ecological movement. In 1892 he became professor of comparative geography at the University of Brussels.
